Sumi Anjuman is a visual artist and activist, who was born and raised in the northern region of Bangladesh, and now lives in Dhaka. As a woman from a conservative Muslim society, she has experienced oppression, but her agony has helped her produce work in which she engages with these issues forthrightly. Despite her socially-focused subject-matter, her work is not of the straightforward-documentary sort; instead, it has been considered as poetic, often verging on the abstract. Her collaborative methodology echoes the ideas of inclusivity while her photographs often invite the audience to be curious about what they see. Her work makes a strong cerebral as well as emotional impact on the observer and forces the viewer to think, as well as respond emotively. She has graduated in photography from the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute.
