Government and Politics in post-Mass Uprising Bangladesh

Lecture by Nurul Kabir

In this talk, Nurul Kabir analyzes the configuration of factors that led to the failure of the interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, formed soon after the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s regime, which had the strongest-ever popular support, to meet general expectations.

Nurul Kabir

Nurul Kabir, a fearless Bangladeshi journalist, editor, and writer, is renowned for his unyielding commitment to press freedom.

As the Editor of New Age, he has shaped it over the last two decades into Bangladesh’s most outspoken English daily by relentlessly critiquing power structures. In November 2025, he was elected president of the Editors’ Council, expanding his media leadership. Among his key books are Birth of Bangladesh: The Politics of History and the History of Politics (2022), Nairbachanik Swairatrantro O Ganatantrer Sangram (Electoral Dictatorship and the Struggle for Democracy) (2012), and The Red Moulana: An Essay on Bhashani’s Ever-Oppositional Democratic Spirit (2012).

However, his fearlessness has been costly; more recently, in December 2025, he was physically assaulted when he went into the office of the Daily Star to speed up rescue efforts of journalists trapped inside the blazing building.
